This month I started playing around with ink and liquid reveals in after effects.
I have been using after effects forever and wasn't even aware of the 'thread' effect.
I made this gross bloody fabric with 'thread', turbulent displace, fractal noise and some blood textures.

In the beginning of July I reconnected with an old acquaintance who now runs a tattoo shop here in San Jose.
Many years ago he saved my right arm by fixing a botched tattoo I had. He did this for free and didn't have to.
All these years later I'm paying him back by making some animations for his brand / shop "The Holy Scythe".
I continued playing around with the ink / liquid reveal.

I then pivoted over to playing around with one of his main shop / social characters.
Below is a progression of my explorations.
Next I animated his logo that he has with the Judas Priest treatment.

As I was exploring the ink reveals, I was reminded my one of my fav books as a kid. Scary Stories to tell in the Dark.
The artwork was very haunting with this dripping ink style that I thought would be fun to try and recreate.
Below are some quick style frames I threw together. Followed by a quick and dirty camera move.
I want to revisit this concept and explore further, perhaps in October when it's time to get spooky.
I took a quick peek at the new Toon shader in Redshift.
I only spent about a day messing around, but it's good to see this finally making it's way in.

It is still quite limited compared to Sketch and Toon in the standard render, but I'm sure it'll continue to evolve. Excited to revisit.
